Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kentucky a no-fault insurance state?

Kentucky is a "choice no-fault" state, meaning that drivers can choose whether or not to participate in the no-fault car insurance system. If you choose to opt out of no-fault, preserving the right to sue an at-fault driver after a car accident.

Is PIP required in Kentucky?

Kentucky requires all motor vehicles, except motorcycles, to have basic PIP coverage. Basic PIP pays for medical expenses, lost wages, and other out-of-pocket costs related to an injury sustained in a car accident, regardless of who is at fault. Basic PIP coverage provides up to $10,000 per person, per accident. Drivers can purchase higher levels of PIP coverage and choose higher deductibles, if desired.

Drivers may reject PIP coverage, but must do so in writing. By rejecting PIP, you are also rejecting the limitations set by the state regarding the right to sue or be sued. If all members of your household reject these limitations as well, you must add PIP coverage for your guests to ensure basic PIP benefits are provided to your passengers and pedestrians

Does Kentucky require uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage?

Drivers can reject uninsured motorist coverage in writing, but it is a good idea to have this coverage. Uninsured motorist coverage can protect you if you are hit by a driver who does not have insurance or does not have enough insurance to cover your damages.
